Opening Comments on “The Rest of God”
We live in a busy world desperately in need of rest. The Word of God, the Holy Bible, actually begins with the reality of our wonderful Creator God bringing everything into being for His own glory. In the creation account of Genesis we see the progress of his well planned workmanship. Some would say the crowning accomplishment of God was the creation of Mankind in His own image on the sixth day. However, we would like to suggest that the crowning achievement of the Creator was the “Rest” he created on the seventh solar day as a shadow and testimony of His entering into his eternal rest expressing His commitment to complete what He has started in His creative efforts. This rest finds its ultimate expression in the revelation of the Son of God, the lamb that was slain BEFORE the foundation of the world (See 1 Peter 1:20, emphasis ours). All the shadows of God’s plan of rest find their greatest expression in Jesus of Nazareth, the Christ (see Colossians 2;17). In the articles listed in the headings above this opening statement you will find a discussion of a few of the aspects of the “REST” God entered into at creation and the shadows he gave us to consider of the promised reality we have in Christ alone. The shadows are never suggested as a means to that promised rest but for some of us the shadows we experience in this present life can be meaningful acts of love and worship that reflect the personal relationship of those that have found “The Rest of God” in Christ alone. The seventh day of rest for the benefit of all mankind is a created memorial to God’s creation and redemption through Christ which finds its authorship and origin long before the law given to the nation of Israel. This is why there was no need to restate the fact of this memorial within the pages of the New Testament. Before it was a law it was a created reality and not merely another moral precept or command in the commandments of God. The law asked Israel to “remember” this created reality because it points us to God’s eternal plan of rest in Christ alone from the very beginning. Come with us as we invite you to consider the shadows and the reality that we would like to share with all those that God is calling to enter into his rest in Christ.
